To use Lighthouse for accessibility testing in Chrome, open the webpage, open Chrome DevTools by right-clicking and selecting “Inspect,” and then click the “Lighthouse” tab.
In the Lighthouse panel, check the “Accessibility” box under Categories and click “Analyze page load”. Lighthouse will run the audit and provide a report with a score and specific issues with suggestions for improvement.
Step-by-step guide
- Open the webpage in Google Chrome that you want to test.
- Open Chrome DevTools by right-clicking anywhere on the page and selecting Inspect.
- Navigate to the Lighthouse tab in the DevTools panel. If you don’t see it, click the double-arrow icon (>>) to reveal more options and select Lighthouse from the list. or press F12 on keyboard.
- Select the “Accessibility” category. You can uncheck other categories like Performance or SEO to focus solely on accessibility, or leave them all checked for a full report.
- Choose your device. Select whether you want to test for mobile or desktop by checking the corresponding box.
- Click “Analyze page load” or “Run audit” to begin the test.
- Review the report. Lighthouse will take a few seconds to generate the report, which will include an accessibility score and a list of any issues found.
- Understand the issues. Click on the different items in the report to learn more about the specific problems and find suggestions on how to fix them.
